WHat is Odyssey of the Mind(OM)?
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. It consists of a Long-Term Problem (LTP) and a Spontaneous component.
Teams can participate with not less than 5 but not more than 7 members.
The Long-Term Problem requires teams to come up with a creative, original and humorous performance, not longer than 8 minutes, which answers the given criteria. Problem sheets, detailing the requirements and their assessment, guide teams in their approach to solving the problem. There is a cost limit assigned to each of the 5 Long-Term Problems and teams must also not obtain any outside assistance. The Long Term Problem constitutes 200 points.
There is a Style component assessing certain specified and other free choice items, that are part of the Long Term Problem performance which constitutes another additional 50 points.
The Spontaneous component consists of problems that teams are supposed to solve spontaneously, and within a short time. There are Verbal problems, Verbal-Hands On Problems and pure Hands On problems. Each require teams to utilize different aspects of creative thinking.
Teams compete in 5 problems across 4 divisions.
Division 1 is for Primary School children.
Division 2 is for Year 1-2
Division 3 is for Year 3-5
Division 4 is for folks older than 18 years of age.
There is also a Kindergarten division.
If teams make it past the National stage of the competition by clinching either the first or second position in their respective problem and division, they are allowed to represent Singapore at the World Finals in America. The Nationals take place in early April, whereas the World Finals are usually at the end of May.
